TREKKING & CLIMBING

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro offers a unique journey through diverse climatic zones, resembling a mini-world tour of ecosystems. Starting from the lush tropical rainforests at the base, trekkers ascend through alpine meadows, where vegetation becomes sparser. Higher up, the landscape transitions into an arid alpine desert, and at the summit, you’re greeted by a frozen, icy world – a stark contrast to the equatorial heat just a few degrees to the south. This dramatic shift in environments, from vibrant greenery to the frigid, snow-capped peak, makes Kilimanjaro a remarkable and ever-changing adventure.

Trekking Packages

Marangu Route
The Marangu {or ‘Tourist’} Route is by far the most popular way to the summit.
Northern Circuit Route
The accommodation on the way up and down is provided in mountain huts
Umbwe Route
Umbwe from the south, is a six-day/five-nights tour and is to be the most scenic and difficult
Machame Route
The second most popular is the Machane Route{nicknamed the ‘Whiskey Route’}
Rongai Route
There is only one route over the northeastern side of the mountain, Rongai, which is usually a five-night climb
Lemosho Route
In the west of Kilimanjaro is the Lemosho Glades route, is perhaps the least used initial ascent route on Kilimanjaro

MOUNT MERU

The focal point of Tanzania’s Arusha National Park is the active stratovolcano Mount Meru, which rises to a height of 4,566 metres. The peak is frequently referred to as the “little brother” of Mount Kilimanjaro. The mountain is just as difficult even if it is not as high as Kilimanjaro. Sixth highest in Africa and second highest in Tanzania, Mount Meru is renowned for its massive cliffs, lush green surrounds, and plethora of species!

More technical climbing abilities are needed to climb Mount Meru than routes up Kilimanjaro. Mount Meru makes up for its “lack” of height with its difficulties. Consequently, having some climbing experience is crucial.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Most Popular Questions

Here are 12 frequent questions and answers that a tour operator like KiliGeti Tanzania Adventures may receive regarding safaris, Kilimanjaro trekking, and Zanzibar:

The best time for a safari in Tanzania is during the dry season, from June to October. This is when wildlife is more concentrated around waterholes, making it easier to spot animals. However, safaris can be enjoyed year-round, and the green season (November to May) offers fewer tourists and lush landscapes.

Mount Kilimanjaro treks usually take between 5 to 9 days, depending on the route you choose. The longer the trek, the higher the chances of acclimatization and successful summit.

No, Mount Kilimanjaro does not require technical climbing experience. However, a good level of physical fitness is important since it's a long trek, and altitude sickness can be a risk above 2,500 meters (8,200 feet).

A safari is an adventure where you visit national parks and game reserves to see wildlife, while a Kilimanjaro trek is a mountain climbing experience, where you ascend the highest peak in Africa. Both offer unique experiences, one focused on wildlife and the other on conquering a mountain.

Tanzania is a popular tourist destination, and safety is generally very good. It's important to follow your guide's instructions, take precautions against altitude sickness while trekking, and follow health and safety advice during your safari (e.g., vaccinations, mosquito repellents).

Zanzibar is known for its beautiful beaches, clear turquoise waters, and rich culture. You can explore the historic Stone Town, relax on beaches like Nungwi or Kendwa, go snorkeling or diving, visit spice farms, or take a dhow cruise on the Indian Ocean.

You can see a wide variety of wildlife, including the "Big Five" (lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos), as well as giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, wildebeests, hyenas, hippos, and many species of birds, especially in areas like the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.

The most popular trekking routes are the Machame Route, Marangu Route, Lemosho Route, and Rongai Route. Each has its own advantages, but Machame and Lemosho are often recommended for better acclimatization and a scenic experience.

Essential items include proper hiking boots, warm clothing for high altitudes, a good sleeping bag, trekking poles, a headlamp, sunscreen, a hat, water bottles, and snacks. A detailed gear list will be provided to you before the trek.

The cost varies depending on the length of the trek, safari package, group size, and level of accommodation. A Kilimanjaro trek typically starts from $1,500 to $3,500, and safaris can range from $150 to $500 per day, depending on the itinerary and the parks you visit.

Training for Mount Kilimanjaro involves regular cardio exercises like walking, hiking, or running, as well as strength training. It's important to build endurance and get used to walking with a backpack. Mental preparation is also key, as the altitude can affect your body.

Yes, many clients combine a Kilimanjaro trek with a safari and a relaxing beach holiday in Zanzibar. A typical itinerary might involve trekking Kilimanjaro first, then going on a safari, and finishing with a few days in Zanzibar to unwind on the beach.
